Masala chai has roots in ancient India, where a spiced, medicinal drink called Kadha was created for its health benefits, using spices but not tea leaves. It evolved over centuries, and the modern masala chai emerged in the mid-1800s when the British East India Company began producing tea in India. The British popularized consuming tea with milk and sugar, and Indian vendors eventually combined the popular spiced Kadha tradition with black tea, milk, and sugar, which became known as “chai”.
